          10am - 4pm

Materials fee:   $20

Location: Ewing Farmhouse, 1915 N 95th St., Lafayette CO 80026

Description:
Weaving paper is much faster than weaving cloth, and with so many decorative papers out there, it is both fun and easy to come up with a multitude of paper combinations. We will experiment with paper crumpling, varying the warp and weft lines and cutting tiny windows to expose the paper which lies beneath. Come explore book structures, lantern forms featuring “woven” hinges, and works that can hang on the wall or in a window as we bring paper weaving into new dimensions.

Day-by-day outline of workshop/intensive:
Day 1: Participants will begin with a basic paper weaving and will then create a woven paper wall/window hanging and/or a lantern structure featuring an adaptation of the piano hinge.
Day 2: Participants will create one or two mini folding screens that feature woven paper, cut-outs and a second woven hinge.

Describe what participants will achieve:
Each participant will create three or four works/samples featuring variations on paper weavings and woven paper hinges.

Please include a brief biographical statement of instructor:

RMC Denver area gathering - Saturday, 11/15

Denver area GBW members gathered and we had a wonderful time learning, sharing ideas and just catching up with each other.  Thanks to Alicia Bailey who offered her gallery space.  We welcomed our new member Adam Bryant, and had a preview of the brand new chapter website that Adam worked on.  Also Karen demonstrated Letter locking techniques that she learned from Jana D'ambrogio: Historical Letterlocking: The Art and Secrecy of Letterwriting , at the Standard this year.  Jana D'ambrogio's video from the Standard can be viewed by clicking above link.

Workshop with Jim Croft in Salt Lake City

We got so delightfully dusty in October as our chapter co-sponsored a workshop with the Book Arts Lab at the University of Utah to bring Jim Croft to Salt Lake City.  We started from the raw bone that Jim brought (below).

We then worked our way through hatchets and files:

Then we sanded, and sanded, and sanded...

Jim giving us tips and tricks throughout...

                                                   Until the beautiful finished product:

Thanks Jim and thanks everyone for coming!

A Report from RMABA's 2014 Book Fair

The RM chapter, as well as other non-profits promoting the book arts, was well-represented at the Rocky Mountain Antiquarian Book Association’s (RMABA) 30th Annual Fair, held Aug. 1-2.

The GBW portion included an exhibit of work held by Abecedarian Gallery (910 Santa Fe in Denver, abecedariangallery.com). Owner and curator Alicia Bailey is also a long-term board member of GBW. The exhibit featured the work of book artists living in the region, including work by GBW chapter members.

Karen Jones, chapter co-chair, provided a display of work produced at various GBW-sponsored workshops offered throughout the years. She also did some demonstrations on minor book repair and book preservation for Fair attendees.

Joining the Guild were representatives of the Book Arts League, the Colorado Calligraphers Guild and the Englewood Letterpress Depot (letterpressdepot.com). Tom Parson, owner of the Depot, is creating a book arts center and living letterpress museum in the historic train building. It’s a great project and local GBW members are looking forward to collaborating with the Depot soon. We also hope to continue exhibiting at the Fair. Both presenters and attendees really enjoyed sharing a book arts weekend.
