ETHIOPIAN BINDING WEEKEND IN DENVER
Sept. 8-9/18

Karen Hanmer skillfully introduced us to this early structure - as early as 300 CE! The workshop also introduced some to covering a book with leather and simple cold tooling.

This structure is known for its
distinctive leather endbands
which are sewn to each

folio in the text.

We even had time to
celebrate Pam's birthday!

Thanks to Your Bindery owners and chapter members Luann and Kirsten for use of
their space and catered lunches.

ETHIOPIAN BINDING with Karen Hanmer

Sept. 8-9, 2018

Your Bindery, 991 S. Jason St., Denver, CO 80223

The Ethiopian binding structure may have emerged as early as the fourth century and has been in use unchanged for centuries. This humble, elegant binding opens flat and is the inspiration for many contemporary “Coptic” book arts structures.
Characteristics include wood boards trimmed flush with the text block, paired sewing stations, and chain stitch- sewing that enters the board edge to incorporate board attachment. Historically the text blocks were made of vellum. Any covering would be done with goatskin.
Students will make a full-leather binding with braided leather endbands and cloth board linings. We will begin by folding and punching signatures, and drilling holes into wood boards. If time permits, simple tooling will enhance the finished binding.
Note: This is an intermediate-level workshop. Students must be able to perform the following tasks proficiently and promptly: folding, marking up, sewing.
